Fit ‘n’ Furry
Petaluma, California
From the very beginning of the project, the owners of Fit ‘n’ Furry had the goal of becoming the first certified “Green Commercial Remodel” in Petaluma. The building was formerly a 17,000 square foot, DHL Delivery distribution facility and needed to be transformed into a pet boarding, grooming, and training facility. Green Building Architects served as consultant and green points rater for the project
Originally constructed as a tilt-up concrete building with the site development already in place, many potential green points were not available to this project. But major achievements were made in sorting and recycling construction waste, greatly improving energy efficiency and indoor air quality, and conserving water. Some of the improvements included:
- Energy-efficient ventilation system capable of bringing in 100% outside air
- Recycling all metals studs
- Play areas use flooring from recycled rubber tires
- Insulating the plenum space where all ducts were run
- Efficient lighting
- Low or zero-VOC paints, sealants and adhesives
- Wet-dry vacuum system eliminates hoses and reduces water use
- All plumbing fixtures are designed for low water use
- Stubbed for future solar water and electrical panels
- All materials for business selected for recyclability or compostability
This project succeeded in becoming the very first commercial building to be recognized under Petaluma's new Green Building Program. Grant and Marci Garl, owners of Fit ‘n’ Furry, make regular public appearances speaking about their project and their “Green Business.” They have even been featured on KPIX Channel 5's program “Eye on the Bay,” in which they describe some of the renovations.
